The best way to enjoy Black Swan is to think of it as a cerebral horror film, as if The Red Shoes were remade with a dark sense of humor. The film projects the life of a girl barely holding it together when all she wants is perfection, both in her...

“Follow this – you wanna dance here, you follow MY rules! It’s not a democracy! You know, you’re not the greatest dancer that ever hit Broadway. What you have is anger and a certain intensity. That’s what I need to make this show work.”

I don’t know what director Darren Aronofsky has against ballet, but he takes whatever it is out on the art in this horror film starring Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers, the ballerina chosen to play the Black Swan in Thomas Leroy’s (Vincent Cassel...

Upon first glance Black Swan appears to be a psychological horror film about a ballerina who goes insane. But in reality it's a movie about a filmmaker who goes insane-in good ways and bad. Perhaps not the kind of madness that engulfs Nina Sayers...

Mainlining Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" ballet score like a drug addict, "Black Swan" pushes its protagonist, a Manhattan ballerina devoted (and then some) to her craft, to the brink of insanity and then a couple of subway stops beyond.

Reel Advice
"Black Swan" looks to be one dark and psychological film - way different from what we perceive the ballet life is usually. It intrigues us how effective it will be in showing the imperfections in a supposedly perfect form of art.

Subtlety may not be Darren Aronofsky's strong suit, yet his heavy handed tendencies have served him well in such features as the harrowing addiction drama Requiem for a Dream and the heart-breaking Golden Globe winner The Wrestler.
Koimoi.com
Black Swan will fare poorly at the Indian box-office as it would appeal only to a select class of the elite audience.

Black Swan

Let’s face it – technology has changed the way we watch movies. The main reason why this Darren Aronofsky directed film didn’t make it to many local reviewers’ Top 10 list is due to the fact that it wasn’t released on Singapore screens last year.
Express.co.uk
IN his last film, The Wrestler, director Darren Aronofsky took a thuggish, ridiculed and down-market ‘performance art’ and fashioned a sensitive and touching human drama, eliciting a career best performance from Mickey Rourke.

Darren aronofsky has made no secret about Black Swan being a companion piece to his Oscar-nominated The Wrestler.
Cinema Autopsy
In order to dance the parts of both the White Swan and the Black Swan in a radical new interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake, Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) has to ‘let go’ to embrace the dark desires within her.
